In September 1990, the Regents of New Mexico Tech (NMT) selected SMPC to begin work on a $4.5M upgrade to accommodate life safety and accessibility issues and to replace aging mechanical and electrical systems at Workman Center. During programming, it became clear that one unique group, the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Complex (EMTRC), needed a separate, secure space (40,000 gsf) away from the other departments. This resulted in a 2-phase project: a new EMRTC facility and the new Workman Center.
The new Workman Center was bid just as EMTRC was in completion. This building brought updated labs, classrooms, and auditorium space to the school. It also provided renovated space for the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and the Mineral Museum.
