Covenant Child Development Center

Albuquerque, New Mexico

The Covenant Child Development Center is the newest addition to the local collection of Covenant Schools, extending services from the original location in Rio Rancho NM. The site is conveniently located in the North Albuquerque Acres neighborhood along Paseo del Norte. The school provides engaging learning facilities while settling within the landscape of the neighboring Sandia Mountains.

The school fosters growth for students ranging from infants to pre-kindergarteners. Prominent areas of the space include teaching classrooms, playgrounds, kitchen for onsite lunch preparation, and a flexible gathering space for school-wide assembly.

The design of the interior organizes around a lifted, light-filled central corridor, and provides sensory wayfinding through materiality and color as a backdrop for exploration. Warm and vibrant materials are inspired by the playfulness and perspective of a young child.

Dynamic color blocking extends from the welcoming main entrance and wraps the perimeter of the exterior. The building nods to the earth-toned identity of the neighborhood, signaling the neutral color palette of the mountains, while depositing playful moments of color.

The design intentions have extended from close work with faculty and school directors, fostering an improved functionality for educators with attention towards the experience of a young child. The building provides a safe home-like environment while creating an inspiring space for children to learn and grow.
