Magistrate Court Prototype Projects

Belen, Roswell, and Ruidoso, New Mexico

SMPC worked with the State of New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) to develop a standard design  for a Magistrate Courthouse prototype that could be replicated throughout the state and easily constructed in rural areas.

The design team evaluated an existing concept, then conducted interviews and program verification meetings with users and community members in Valencia County, Lea County, and Lincoln County. A revised program with space allocations and alternate plan concepts was developed that provided secure circulation for court personnel within an efficient 11,000 square foot footprint.

The prototype floor plan was similar for each municipality, however the site plan and exterior appearance of each was adapted to reflect the distinction of their site conditions, local architectural vernacular and regional culture.

Three new courthouses were completed in 2023 within the constraints of a limited budget for communities in Belen, Lovington, and Ruidoso.
